Memory loss and Hypothyroidism

An ailment which is the result of the lack of secretion of thyroxine and triiodothyronine by thyroid gland is known as hypothyroidism. This ailment can be caused due to some injury to the thyroid gland, deficiency of iodine and the thyroid disease or medication or surgery on the thyroid gland due to the development of cancer in many cases. Pituitary gland or the master gland then produces thyroid stimulating hormone which acts as a stimulant for the secretion of thyroxine and triiodothyronine which are essential for the healthy development and normal functioning of the body. Metabolic rate of the body is severely affected by the deficiency of the hormones.

The common signs of hypothyroidism are fatigue and drowsiness, less resistance to cold, loss in appetite but gain in weight, constipation, headaches, chest pain, dry hair, pale skin, muscle cramps and irregular menstrual cycle. Lack of concentration and a drastic reduction in the memory retention power are the most severe outcome of this ailment. The loss of memory is reported only in stern cases. Memory loss is the most dangerous outcome of hypothyroidism as it affects the self of an individual. This memory loss is never permanent as the patient can regain the lost part of the memory by consuming thyroxine. Adequate amount of thyroxine must be consumed by the patient so that the thyroid gland works efficiently.

Hashimoto’s Disease is an ailment which is the outcome of some alterations in the immune system which aids in developing the antibodies. Due to this ailment memory of an individual becomes dull or retaining power of persons weakens. Any abnormality in the metabolism of the body leads to decreased functioning of the thyroid gland which can even lead to anxiety.

This ailment can be the outcome of medical treatments, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and radioactive iodine which affects the normal working of the thyroid gland. Radioactive treatment affects the working of the thyroid gland and thus less number of hormones are secreted which leads to grievous outcomes. Hypothyroidism can also be caused due to disorder of Hypothalamic-pituitary gland also known as the master gland as all other glands are controlled by this master gland. Heredity at times can even be the cause of hypothyroidism

This ailment can be combated by consuming healthy and nutritious diet which includes oatmeal, seafood, radish, garlic, pulses, mushrooms, bananas, egg yolk, beetroot and watercress. One must also try and refrain from the cabbage, peanuts, maize, millets, cauliflower and sweet potatoes. Iodine must be taken in sufficient amount for healthy and normal functioning of the body’s metabolism. There are few herbs which are quite beneficial for the treatment of hypothyroidism. Bladderwrack, Fucus vesiculosus and few Chinese herbs are quite useful and should be included in the diet. As the herbs are natural there are no side effects thus one can without any second thought take them.

As the immune system of an individual becomes weak therefore one must ensure that the diet is rich in Vitamin B complex, Omega 3, Vitamin C, multivitamins and multiminerals which provide the body with the strength to resist many affects of hypothyroidism.
