Hypothyroidism and Iodine

Hypothyroidism is basically a disease in which there is inadequate production of the thyroid hormone, and it’s caused due to lack of iodine in the body. Deficiency of iodine can in fact lead to many adverse effects like the following:

In fact if a person is suffering from hypothyroidism then the disease can become even worse if there is a low intake of zinc in the patient’s diet. There are however, many natural foods that can also aggravate the hypothyroidism condition.

Cabbage, broccoli, brassicas and cauliflower can heighten the iodine requirement especially if these food items are consumed raw. Some other food items that are included in this list are:

  1. Soy beans
  2. Lima beans
  3. Cassava
  4. Maize
  5. Flaxseed
  6. Millet

But as everything has its pros and cons so is the case with iodine. People who are having more of seaweeds, unintentionally they are consuming high amount of iodine without realizing its consequences.

Excessive intake of iodine can lead to disruptive consequences on glands which in turn are followed by hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. The latter that is hyperthyroidism is mostly a condition that is found in the old people. Therefore always try not to intake excess of iodine salt as it can have undesirable effects on your body. With proper treatment and medication hypothyroidism diseases can be cured but it’s always preferable to take precaution and safety measures so that don’t encounter again the disease of hypothyroidism.
