Foods that worsen the thyroid functions

Food plays a major role in determining the health of the individual. As the Chinese adage, food determines the character of the individual. The better food you in take the better is your character. This though sounds ridiculous; many studies have proved the statement. When this can hold good for the normal diet only. Did you know that there are certain foods that have to be avoided best to treat certain kinds of illness or diseases? Our granny would say, please don’t consume them as they can cause high BP. Since the age old days, many dos and don’ts have been followed for the consumption of the food. Actually they are not mere assumptions but are proven facts that some food are harmful for a particular disease in the sense that it can worsen the disorder or can cause malfunction of any particular organ or group of organs.

Similarly, even for thyroid dysfunction, there are dos and don’ts for food which we will discuss in this article. The first and foremost thing that comes to mind is white bread. This in spite of being the most favorite foods for many of the Americans can make the body difficult to synthesise and regulate insulin. In addition has proved to cause hormonal imbalance in the body.

The big no for thyroid patients are caffeine. It is hard to resist coffee but it can be still harder to treat the thyroid problem when it sprouts up. It has the capacity to depress the thyroid function and can further worsen the situation.

Broccoli is the topper goitrogenis food. Goitrogens are chemicals which interfere with the hormonal secretion of thyroid hormones. So, it is always better to stay away from them. Adding to this list is the peaches. It belongs to the fruits and is one of the top goitrogenic foods. Better try to avoid them as well as they tend to cause hypothyroidism a condition where the level of thyroid hormone secretion is reduced.

We also can add peanut to this list. Though they can be all time favorite friendly snack item, they have been proved to cause thyroid disorders. Mainly, they produce hypothyroidism like the broccoli and peaches.

Fluoride, it is one of the main ingredients in tooth paste have known to interfere in the thyroid hormone secretion. Studies have shown that fluoride actively competes with the iodine receptor cells in the thyroid hormone and actively blocks the iodine from being attached towards the receptor cells. As a result, there is decreased availability of the iodine molecule for the thyroid gland to produce the hormone thyroxin and tri iodo thyronine.  This results in the hormonal imbalance to further worsen the condition.

Chlorine like fluoride also tends to block the receptors of the iodine molecule on the thyroid gland to interfere in the hormonal secretion.  In addition soy proteins from various soy foods and tofu are known to interact with the iodine molecule and prevent it from adhering to the receptors on the thyroid gland.

Garlic and white flour are also added to the no no foods for the thyroid patients as it seems that they also reduces the iodine uptake by the thyroid glands and thus finally leads to the hormonal dysfunction.
